CE Hours Total=12 hours

  • At least 6 hours shall relate directly and primarily to the clinical application of respiratory care.  Plc 1507.04(b).

Do courses need to be preapproved by the Board?

No; however, courses shall be:

  • Approved or sponsored by AARC; or
  • Non-AARC approved courses:
    • Shall be sponsored or provided by any statewide, regional, or national professional respiratory care organization or any federal agency; or approved by the accreditation council for continuing education of the AMA, AHA, or AAP; and
    • Relate to one of more of the following:  the clinical application of respiratory care, teaching respiratory care, respiratory care supervision and consultation skills, respiratory care curriculum development, trans-disciplinary issues or skills applicable to respiratory care, respiratory care administration and management, respiratory care research, ECMO, or other continuing professional education
Ways to earn CEs: Categories of CEs 

  • Receipt of college-level course related to respiratory care, as further described in Plc 1507.07;
    • 1 credit hour = 1 CE
  • Non-academic live programming such as courses, programs, workshops, and seminars, as further described in Plc 1507.08;
    • CE hours awarded determined by provider
  • Passing specialty examinations, as further described in Plc 1507.09;
    • 12 CE for each specialty examination passed
  • Public professional presentations related to respiratory care, as further described in Plc 1507.10; 
    • 1 clock hour of presentation = 2 CE, max 8 hours per renewal cycle. 
  • Participation in a respiratory care research project, as further described in Plc 1507.11; 
    • 4 hours of participation on a research project = 1 CE, max 8 hours per renewal cycle.  
  • Taking and passing courses for initial or renewal certification, as further described in Plc 1507.12; 
    • BLS initial certification= 8 CE
    • BLS renewal certification= 4 CE
    • ACLS initial certification= 16 CE
    • ACLS renewal certification= 8 CE
    • PALS initial certification= 16 CE
    • PALS renewal certification= 8 CE
    • NRP initial certification= 16 CE
    • NRP certification= 8 CE
  • Participating as an instructor or instructor trainee in one of the courses for initial or renewal certification, as further described in Plc 1507.13;
    • BLS initial certification= 8 CE
    • BLS renewal certification= 4 CE
    • ACLS initial certification= 16 CE
    • ACLS renewal certification= 8 CE
    • PALS initial certification= 16 CE
    • PALS renewal certification= 8 CE
    • NRP initial certification= 8 CE

  • Teaching a college-level course relating to respiratory care, as further described in Plc 1507.14;
    • 1 hour of teaching = 2 CE.  Licensee shall only claim credit once for preparing and teaching the course.
  • Facility-based in-service training, as further described in Plc 1406.08;
    • 1 clock hour of attendance = 1 CE, max 4 CE per renewal cycle
  • Publication of a writing related to respiratory care, as further described in Plc 1507.16
    • Book:
      • Sole or primary author:  12 CE per article, max 12 CE per cycle
      • Co-author:  6 CE per article, max 12 CE per cycle
    • Peer-reviewed chapter of a book or article:
      • Sole or primary author:  6 CE per article, max 12 CE per cycle
      • Co-author:  3 CE per article, max 12 CE per cycle
    • Non peer-reviewed article:
      • Sole or primary author:  4 CE per article, max 12 CE per cycle
      • Co-author:  2 CE per article, max 12 CE per cycle
  • Participation in the work of professional boards, committees and agencies, as further described in Plc 1507.17;
    • Each board, committee, or agency served for at least half renewal cycle= 2 CE, max 6 CE per renewal cycle
  • Self-directed education, as further described in Plc 1507.18;
    • Course credit assigned by provider.
    • Shall pass examination at end of program.  
    • Shall Relate to one of more of the following:  the clinical application of respiratory care, teaching respiratory care, respiratory care supervision and consultation skills, respiratory care curriculum development, trans-disciplinary issues or skills applicable to respiratory care, respiratory care administration and management, respiratory care research, ECMO, or other continuing professional education
